A German Adventure: Cologne & Berlin

Cologne: A Blend of Ancient Splendor and Modern Vibrancy
The year kicked off with the enchanting city of Cologne, a place where history breathes through the walls of ancient buildings and modern life buzzes in its lively streets. The centrepiece of my visit was the awe-inspiring Cologne Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Standing majestically against the city’s skyline, this UNESCO World Heritage site, with its towering spires and intricate façades, left me spellbound. Inside, the stained glass windows painted the interiors with a kaleidoscope of light, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere.

Wandering through the Old Town, I was captivated by the charming blend of traditional German houses and modern shops. Here, I found myself lost in conversations with locals, each sharing stories that wove the rich tapestry of Cologne’s history and culture.
Berlin: A City of Contrasts and Resilience
Next, my journey took me to Berlin, a city that wears its history on its sleeve while embracing the future with open arms. Berlin is a city of contrasts – a juxtaposition of the old and the new, the traditional and the avant-garde. The East Side Gallery, an open-air gallery on the remnants of the Berlin Wall, was a highlight. This colourful stretch of history, adorned with graffiti and murals, spoke volumes about the city’s past struggles and its unbreakable spirit.

As I strolled through the streets of Berlin, I was struck by the diversity of its neighbourhoods. From the historic charm of Mitte to the trendy buzz of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, each area offered a different flavour of Berlin life. The Brandenburg Gate, once a symbol of division, now stands as a beacon of unity and peace, encapsulating the transformative journey of the city.

In Berlin’s bustling cafes and vibrant street food markets, I tasted the multicultural essence of the city. The culinary scene was a delightful mix of traditional German fare and international flavours, mirroring the city’s cosmopolitan spirit.

The surrounding natural park offered a myriad of hiking trails. Each path led to stunning vistas and hidden nooks, allowing me to immerse myself fully in the natural beauty and serenity of Monserrat. This spiritual retreat was a profound experience, offering moments of introspection and a deep connection with nature.
Malaga: A Coastal Gem Bathed in Sunshine
In February, together with my son, we took a journey to a sun-soaked Malaga, a vibrant coastal city in Spain’s Costa del Sol. Known for its golden beaches, rich artistic heritage, and lively atmosphere, Malaga was the perfect antidote to the winter blues.

The city’s beaches, like La Malagueta, were a delight, offering sun-drenched sands and azure waters. The promenade, lined with palm trees and bustling chiringuitos (beach bars), was perfect for leisurely strolls and sampling local delicacies, especially the fresh seafood.

During our visit in Malaga, together with my youngest son, we ventured to the fascinating territory of Gibraltar, a place where cultures converge. Gibraltar, perched at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula, is a unique fusion of British and Spanish influences, evident in its lifestyle, language, and cuisine.

The Rock of Gibraltar, an iconic limestone monolith, dominates the landscape. Venturing up the Rock, not only did I witness stunning views of the Mediterranean and the African coast, but I also encountered the famous Barbary macaques – Europe’s only wild monkeys. Their playful antics were a joy to watch, although keeping a close eye on my belongings became a necessity!
