Ah, the sheer joy of spontaneity and travel! If you’re familiar with my escapades, you know that I’m always on the move, embracing new adventures at every turn. This year alone, I’ve wandered the charming streets of Gdansk, marvelled at Athens’ ancient wonders, and soaked in Dublin’s vibrant culture. Yet, today’s tale ventures into the heart of Europe, to a place known for its beautiful scenery, unmatched chocolate, and a bit of luxury – Switzerland. Specifically, I’ll share the magic of a day spent in Zurich, a city that captured my heart, especially during its enchanting Easter celebration.

The journey began with an appealing birthday gift from my partner – day trip to Zurich. And what a gift it was! Flying out from London Gatwick airport on an early EasyJet flight at 6:40 am, we found ourselves in Zurich in just one hour and twenty minutes, ready to explore.

Upon arrival at Flughafen Zurich, we grabbed a 24-hour travel ticket for Zone 1 at £14 per person. This handy ticket allowed us unlimited access to trams, buses, trains, and even a boat ride (excluding scenic boats), along with free or reduced admission to several museums. Despite the convenience of a direct S-Bahn train from the airport to Zurich HB, we opted for the tram to soak in the scenic views, embracing the slight detour with excitement.

Our adventure truly began with the fountains tour, which we organised ourselves. In Zurich during Easter, the city’s fountains were beautifully decorated with flowers. This unique Zurich tradition turns fountains into works of art, covered in thousands of roses and making the city look like a garden.

Our first stop was Munsterhof, where the fountain was filled with colourful roses, creating a stunning reflection against the historic buildings around. It felt like spring was coming to life right there.

Then, at Helmhaus at Wasserkirche, the fountain looked amazing with its flowers blending perfectly with the church’s calm, adding a burst of colour to the scene.

At Zahringerplatz at Predigerkirche, the fountain’s roses seemed to tell stories of Zurich’s history, making it feel like a guardian of the city’s past.

In Munzplatz Augustinergasse, the air was filled with the scent of roses from another beautifully decorated fountain, showing Zurich’s blend of history and modern life.

The most memorable spot was Rennweg – Amazonenbrunnen, where instead of roses, tulips were used, highlighting Zurich’s love for diversity and the joyful Easter spirit.

Every fountain we saw was a celebration of nature, beauty, and community, making our experience unforgettable. This tradition showcases Zurich’s charm, mixing its historical background with today’s lively culture.

After so much walking there was a time for something to eat. The culinary highlight of our day was indulging in Raclette at The Raclette Factory. The initial overwhelming cheese aroma soon gave way to a cosy, inviting atmosphere. Paired with local beer, the meal was a pricey yet unforgettable experience, setting us back £60 for two. Yet, it was a taste of Switzerland’s famed gastronomy that we wouldn’t have missed for the world.

Fuelled by our hearty lunch, we set off to explore Zurich’s many attractions. Zurich, a city where every corner tells a story and every view paints a picture, welcomed us with open arms. As we wandered through its streets, each landmark we visited added a new layer to our understanding and appreciation of this splendid city. Let me take you through these enchanting places, each with its own unique charm.
River Limmat’s Dual Perspectives

Our journey began with a leisurely walk along both sides of the River Limmat, a vein of life for Zurich. The eastern side, with its bustling cafes and vibrant street scenes, offered a lively atmosphere, where the laughter and chatter of the city seemed to converge. In contrast, the western bank provided a more serene experience, with tranquil spots perfect for introspective moments. The juxtaposition of the lively and the peaceful along the Limmat encapsulated the essence of Zurich – a city that harmoniously blends the bustling with the serene.
The Historic Old Town’s Timeless Charm

Next, we ventured into Zurich’s historic Old Town, a labyrinth of narrow alleys and cobblestone streets that whisper tales of yesteryears. Each step took us deeper into the city’s rich past, with medieval buildings, quaint boutiques, and hidden squares revealing themselves like pages from a storybook. The Old Town is a mosaic of history and modernity, where ancient guild houses stand proudly alongside contemporary galleries and cafes, offering a glimpse into Zurich’s soul.

This vista provided a moment of tranquility, a pause to breathe in the majesty of nature’s artistry.

Our footsteps led us to the imposing Grossmunster, an iconic twin-towered church that dominates Zurich’s skyline. As a centerpiece of the city’s spiritual life, it offered an awe-inspiring glimpse into the past, with its Romanesque architecture and rich religious history. The interior, with its stark beauty and stained glass windows, coupled with the panoramic views from its towers, offered a profound sense of peace and reflection.

It was a place for quiet contemplation, where the layers of Zurich’s history could be felt most palpably, from its Roman origins to its present-day vibrancy.
Pfalzgasse Street: A Picture-Perfect Zurich

Our exploration took us down Pfalzgasse street, a picturesque embodiment of Zurich’s charm. This narrow alley, flanked by beautifully preserved buildings, exuded an almost cinematic quality. It was easy to imagine the centuries of footsteps that had traversed its path, adding to the street’s story with each passing day. Pfalzgasse was a vivid reminder of the city’s ability to maintain its beauty and character through the ages.
Front of the Opera House: A Cultural Respite

Our first stop was the front of Zurich’s Opera House, an architectural marvel and a beacon of the arts. Situated at the heart of Sechseläutenplatz, the Opera House’s grand facade and elegant surroundings offered a moment of cultural respite. We lounged on the spacious square, basking in the late afternoon sun, while the melodious echoes of rehearsals occasionally drifted from within. It was a reminder of Zurich’s rich cultural tapestry and the vibrant arts scene that thrives within its walls.
The Church of St. Peter: Time Stands Still

Just a short walk from the bustling city centre, we found solace in the peaceful embrace of The Church of St. Peter. Known for having the largest clock face in Europe, this church is not just a timekeeper but a sanctuary of calm. Inside, the quiet was profound, offering a space for contemplation amidst the day’s adventures. The simplicity of its interior, combined with the historical significance, lent an air of timeless peace that was deeply moving.
Augustinergasse & Rennweg: Strolling Through History

Our stroll through Augustinergasse & Rennweg felt like a step back in time. These narrow, cobblestoned streets, lined with colourful old townhouses, were vibrant with floral decorations and quaint shopfronts. Walking these lanes, we were enveloped in the charm of Old Zurich, with each turn revealing another picturesque vignette. It was a leisurely journey through the city’s past, where the fusion of history and present-day life was displayed in full colour.
Storchen Terrasse: Reflecting by the Water’s Edge

The Storchen Terrasse, with its unparalleled views of the Limmat and the Old Town, offered a perfect vantage point to pause and reflect. Sitting at the water’s edge, we watched as the city moved around us, the river’s gentle flow a calming presence. It was a place of connection, not just to Zurich’s scenic beauty but to the countless others who had shared this view throughout the ages. The terrasse provided a serene backdrop for contemplation, allowing us to absorb the day’s experiences fully.
Fraumunster Church: A Serene Finale

Our day in Zurich could not have ended more perfectly than with a visit to the Fraumunster Church. Each window told a story, casting reflections that danced across the walls and floors. The serene beauty of the Fraumunster was a soothing finale to our adventure, enveloping us in an atmosphere of quiet reflection and awe.

Its allure lies not just in the picturesque landscapes or the historical edifices that adorn its streets but also in the vibrant traditions and gastronomic adventures that await around every corner. Despite the brevity of our visit, Zurich left an indelible mark on our hearts, with memories as vivid as the roses that bloom in its fountains during Easter.

Our day was a journey through time, nature, and the culinary arts. Beginning with the historical marvels like the Grossmunster and the serene Lindenhoff, and transitioning to the tranquil shores of Lake Zurich against the majestic backdrop of the Alps, every moment was a discovery. The city’s culinary scene, highlighted by our indulgent raclette experience, added a flavourful dimension to our adventure, offering a taste of Switzerland’s famed cheese culture.
