As the Christmas season rolls in, with its signature blend of twinkling lights, heartfelt exchanges of gifts, and the crisp chill of winter, it’s also a time that ushers in a deep reflection on the values of empathy and compassion. In a world bustling with busy schedules and endless responsibilities, this festive period stands as a gentle reminder to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of giving and sharing. It’s a season that inspires many, including myself and my partner, to step out of our routine and embrace the spirit of adventure and kindness in new and meaningful ways.

This year, our quest for a unique Christmas experience led us to choose an extraordinary destination: the enchanting island of Madeira. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and a climate that defies the typical winter cold, Madeira beckoned us with the promise of an unforgettable holiday escapade.

Our adventure commenced in the early hours of a crisp December morning, with an EasyJet flight departing from Bristol. As we boarded our flight, the anticipation of exploring Madeira’s famed beauty filled us with excitement. We were not just tourists in search of leisure; we were explorers in pursuit of experiencing the unique yuletide spirit that Madeira had to offer.

Upon our arrival at Madeira’s International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo, the contrast was immediate and delightful. We traded the typical cold December weather for Madeira’s warm, sun-kissed embrace. The island welcomed us with open arms, its temperature pleasantly hovering over 20°C, a stark contrast to the chilly 11°C and rain we had braced ourselves for. This immediate encounter with Madeira’s warmth set the tone for what was to become a magical three-day journey.

Our visit to Madeira was more than just a holiday; it was a journey into an island’s heart during one of the most magical times of the year. It was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the festive traditions, local flavours, and stunning natural beauty of a place that has long captured the imaginations of travellers from around the world. In the following pages, I invite you to join me on this incredible journey through Madeira during the Christmas season, a time when the island not only shimmers with festive lights but also radiates with the warmth of its people and the richness of its culture.

Join us as we recount our adventure, from the charming streets of Funchal adorned with Christmas lights to the breathtaking natural landscapes that make Madeira a jewel in the Atlantic. Our story is one of discovery, joy, and the enchanting allure of a Christmas season spent on an island where every turn offers a new wonder.
Day 1: Arrival in a Festive Wonderland

Our journey from the airport to Funchal was a scenic drive, offering us glimpses of the island’s rugged coastline and lush landscapes. The excitement grew as we approached our hotel, the Pestana Casino Park Ocean and Spa Hotel, known for its stunning architecture designed by the renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The hotel’s location, perched on a hillside, offered breathtaking views of the harbor and the Atlantic Ocean.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with the warm hospitality Madeira is known for. Though we arrived before the check-in time, the hotel staff were accommodating, inviting us to relax by the outdoor pool with a complimentary welcome drink.

The view from the pool area was spectacular, providing us with our first real glimpse of Madeira’s stunning natural beauty. The azure waters of the ocean, framed by the lush greenery of the island, were a sight to behold.

After freshening up, we set out to explore Funchal’s old town, a mere 10-minute walk from our hotel. The streets of Funchal were a festive spectacle, adorned with Christmas lights and decorations, creating a magical atmosphere that was both enchanting and heartwarming. The Christmas market, bustling with activity, offered an array of local crafts and delicacies, each stall telling its own story of Madeiran culture and tradition.

Our stroll led us to the Ethnographic Village, an immersive experience into the island’s rich heritage. Here, we witnessed a live display of Madeiran traditions, from crafts to folklore.

The highlight was the Christmas nativity scene, a masterpiece of local artistry that captured the essence of the holiday spirit.

It was in this village that we had our first taste of Madeiran cuisine – a hearty local wheat soup and ‘Bolo do Caco’, a traditional bread made with sweet potato. The simplicity and richness of flavors in this meal were a delightful introduction to the island’s culinary traditions.

Continuing our exploration, we visited the majestic Funchal’s Cathedral, an architectural gem that houses yet another beautiful nativity scene. The cathedral’s blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles was awe-inspiring, a testament to Madeira’s historical and cultural depth.

Just a short walk away, we found the Colegio Church, where families gathered to enjoy a Christmas train ride, a joyous sight that brought back memories of childhood Christmases.

Our walk back to the hotel was a journey through Funchal’s vibrant streets, now illuminated by the soft glow of Christmas lights. The festive decorations, coupled with the gentle hum of the city, created a sense of wonder and nostalgia.

As we entered our hotel room, a surprise awaited us – a complimentary bottle of Prosecco, a thoughtful gesture that added to the day’s many joys. The view from our room, overlooking the twinkling lights of Funchal, was the perfect backdrop for a toast to our first day in Madeira.

Refreshed and reinvigorated, we ventured out once again to experience Funchal by night. The city transformed into a wonderland of lights, its streets alive with the energy of the holiday season. We dined at O Visconde, a restaurant known for its exceptional service and exquisite cuisine, where we were treated to an array of local flavors, each dish a celebration of Madeiran gastronomy.

Our night concluded with a stroll through the streets, leading us to the Art of Open Doors area, a vibrant showcase of street art that adds a contemporary touch to the historical city. This unique project in the old town, Rua de Santa Maria, is an open-air gallery that transforms the area into a vibrant canvas showcasing the creativity and artistic spirit of Madeira. Each door along the street is painted with murals, each telling a different story, each a window into the soul of the island. The diversity and talent displayed here were astounding. From traditional motifs reflecting Madeira’s heritage to contemporary designs addressing modern themes, the range of art was both impressive and thought-provoking.

Nearby, we discovered the Capela do Corpo Santo, an ancient chapel that spoke of the island’s rich religious history. Although it was too late to explore its interior, its exterior was a sight to behold under the starlit sky.

We ended our day with a leisurely walk back to the hotel, our hearts full of the day’s experiences.

As we retraced our steps through Funchal’s festive streets, we realized that Madeira was more than just a destination; it was a living, breathing tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. Our first day on the island was a perfect blend of discovery and wonder, setting the tone for what was to become an unforgettable Christmas adventure.
Day 2: Exploring the Natural Wonders of Madeira

The second day of our Madeiran adventure was dedicated to exploring the island’s extraordinary natural wonders. After waking up in the luxurious comfort of the Pestana Casino Park Ocean and Spa Hotel, we started our day with a hearty breakfast, a delightful array of local and international cuisine that energized us for the day ahead.

Our first destination was the Achadas da Cruz Cable Car, a marvel of engineering set against the backdrop of Madeira’s rugged cliffs. This cable car is known for its steep descent, offering a unique vantage point over the verdant valleys and deep blue sea below. The journey down this 98% slope is not for the faint-hearted, but it offers an unmatched experience of Madeira’s dramatic landscape.

My partner, braver than I, took the cable car down while I stayed atop the cliff, admiring the panoramic views. Despite my fear of heights, the beauty of the scenery from above was breathtaking, and I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy for the up-close encounter with nature that my partner experienced.

After reuniting at the top, we continued our journey to Porto Moniz, famous for its natural swimming pools carved out of lava rocks. The pools, filled with crystal-clear seawater, are a natural wonder that showcases Madeira’s unique geological history.

We spent time wandering around these natural formations, feeling the ocean spray and marveling at the interplay of the volcanic rock with the mighty Atlantic.

Our exploration then led us to Ribera da Janela, where we were treated to a spectacular view from the falochron, a viewpoint that offered us a postcard-perfect scene. The raw beauty of the ocean crashing against the rugged coastline was a powerful reminder of nature’s untamed splendor.

Next, we found ourselves at Praia de Seixal, a serene beach known for its unusual dark brown sand and the clarity of its waters. The contrast of the dark sand against the blue of the ocean and the green of the surrounding hills was striking. We took a moment here to relax and soak in the tranquility of this lesser-known gem, letting the sound of the waves wash over us.

As the winter sun began to dip, reminding us of the shorter days, we decided to stop for a meal at the Caravela restaurant in Sao Vicente. This quaint eatery, nestled in a picturesque village, offered a taste of authentic Madeiran cuisine. We indulged in Scabbard fish fillet with banana, a unique combination that tantalizes the palate, and Espetada, grilled beef cooked on laurel skewers, a dish that filled the air with mouthwatering aromas. The food was not only delicious but also a window into the island’s culinary traditions.

With our appetites satisfied, we returned to Funchal just in time to witness the last moments of the sunset. The sky, painted in hues of orange and pink, provided a stunning backdrop to our hotel. We savored this view with a glass of Prosecco, a gentle reminder of the hotel’s warm hospitality.

Energized by our daytime adventures and the beauty of the sunset, we decided to head back into town to immerse ourselves in the festive spirit once more. The Christmas lights at Jardim Municipal do Funchal transformed the park into a twinkling wonderland, enhancing the joyous atmosphere. At the Christmas market, we tried Poncha, a traditional Madeiran drink, its warmth and sweetness perfectly encapsulating the festive mood. Our evening stroll took us through La Vie shopping mall, where I couldn’t resist buying some fresh fruits for the next day snack.

Our day concluded with a sumptuous dinner at Restaurante Victoria, conveniently located near our hotel. The restaurant’s cozy ambiance was the perfect setting to reflect on a day filled with natural wonders and cultural discoveries. As we headed back to our room, our hearts and minds were full of the day’s experiences, a tapestry of Madeira’s natural beauty and warm hospitality.
Day 3: Farewell to Madeira – A Journey Through Time and Nature

Our final day in Madeira dawned with a gentle reminder of the island’s serene beauty. Despite the temptation to linger in the luxurious comfort of our hotel, the spirit of adventure beckoned us to make the most of our remaining time. Starting our day with a delightful breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant, we indulged in a smorgasbord of local and international flavors, a perfect energy boost for the day ahead.

The initial plan was to visit the famous Mercado dos Lavradores, Funchal’s vibrant food market known for its colorful displays of local fruits, vegetables, and flowers. However, a leisurely start to the morning meant we had to save this experience for a future visit. This slight change in plans only added to the excitement of exploration, reminding us that Madeira always had more to offer.

Our first stop was the breathtaking viewpoint, Miradouro do Guindaste. The drive there, winding through lush landscapes, was a treat in itself. At the viewpoint, we were greeted with a panorama that captured the essence of Madeira’s dramatic coastline – cliffs plunging into the deep blue Atlantic, framed by a skyline that stretched endlessly. The view was so captivating that time seemed to stand still as we soaked in the vastness and beauty of the natural world around us.

Next, we ventured to Santana, a town famous for its traditional thatched-roof houses, known as ‘Palheiros’. These triangular houses, with their white walls, red doors, and windows framed by blue trim, are a picturesque representation of Madeira’s architectural heritage. Walking among these charming dwellings felt like stepping into a fairy tale, each house telling a story of the island’s rustic past.

Our journey continued to Parque Florestal das Queimadas, a natural park renowned for its lush greenery and hiking trails. Here, we embarked on a short but memorable walk along a muddy path, surrounded by the rich, verdant landscape that is characteristic of Madeira’s laurisilva forest. The air was fresh, filled with the scent of wet earth and green leaves, a sensory reminder of the island’s unspoiled natural beauty.

Although we longed to explore further and witness the famed waterfalls, time constraints nudged us towards our next destination. We drove to the easternmost point of the island, Ponta de São Lourenço.

The landscape here was starkly different, characterized by rugged cliffs and sparse vegetation, showcasing the geological diversity of Madeira. Our picnic here, amidst such raw and contrasting beauty, was perhaps the most memorable meal of our trip. With panoramic views of the ocean on one side and the island’s unique topography on the other, it was a fitting farewell feast to this magical island.

As the afternoon waned, we reluctantly began our journey back, mindful of our evening flight. The drive back to the airport was reflective, filled with conversations about the unforgettable experiences we had enjoyed. Each turn of the road brought back memories of the past three days – the warm people we met, the delicious food we savored, and the awe-inspiring sights we witnessed.

Madeira, with its enchanting blend of natural wonders and cultural richness, had captured our hearts. As we prepared to leave, we knew that this was not a goodbye, but a ‘see you later’. The island had much more to offer, and we were already dreaming of our return.

Our flight back to Bristol was a quiet one, as we both were immersed in our thoughts, reliving the moments that made our Madeira trip so special. The twinkling lights of Funchal, the dramatic cliffs of the north coast, the quaint charm of Santana’s thatched houses, and the serene beauty of Ponta de São Lourenço – these images would stay with us forever.

In Madeira, we found more than just a holiday destination; we discovered a place where nature, culture, and tradition converge to create a truly unique experience. As the plane ascended, leaving the island behind, we carried with us the warmth and joy of a Christmas spent in Madeira, a jewel in the Atlantic that promised to lure us back again.
